Asian American Bar Association of Houston
A voice for the Asian-American Community
The AABA Houston Pro Bono Committee is organizing two groups of volunteers to help voters over the phone through the non-partisan Election Protection Hotline. We need volunteers for the Election Protection hotline in October, especially during Early Voting periods.
The hotline is run by the non-partisan Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and provides assistance to voters with problems and guides them throughout the voting process. Volunteers must complete an on-demand training, which is approximately two hours and can be done on your own schedule. Support is provided to all volunteers via a captain during their shift, and volunteers are provided “user guides” and substantive information on voting.
You can sign up using this link: https://electionprotection.wetheaction.org/. The call volume is much higher than anticipated, so please volunteer if you can! Interested AABA members should volunteer for four and a half hour time slots on Friday, October 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m CST, and Saturday, October 31 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST for the Southwest Call Center. If these times do not work for you or the slots have been filled up in the link above, feel free to join a different shift or different call region. Note, there may be some downtime if there are no voter calls or voicemails to be answered, so you could multitask and complete other work during your shift.
The Pro Bono Committee will set up a WhatsApp group chat for AABA members that volunteer on the same day for the dates above, so members can bounce questions or ideas with each other and discuss issues they are encountering with the voters.
