This course will review the federal Voting Rights Act and Help America Vote Act. It will specifically review the Voting Rights Act’s requirements for language assistance translated ballots and prohibition against anti-Asian voter discrimination. Attorneys will then be trained on interviewing voters, inspecting poll sites, and observing poll worker conduct on Election Day.

The AABA is proud to partner with Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program, VN Teamwork, and Boat People SOS for the 2012 Wills Clinic. This annual event provides pro bono preparation of a Will, Medical Power of Attorney, Directive to Physicians, HIPAA Release, and Declaration of Guardianship for qualified clients.

This year's clinic will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 8:30 am - 2:00 pm at the VN Teamwork Center at 11210 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, TX 77072. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

ATTORNEY VOLUNTEERS:

1) Drafts of the prepared documents are due by no later than Sunday, April 22, 2012. Please email all drafted documents in Word-format to Tyrone Lin of HVLP at tyrone.lin@hvlp.org. Volunteer attorneys should also print a copy of all drafted documents for the client folder and save a copy of the drafted documents on a flash drive. Both the client folder and the flash drive should be brought to the Wills Clinic on April 28, 2012.

2) Please RSVP to confirm that you will be attending the Wills Clinic on April 28, 2012 and will be able to meet your client at the appointed time.

CLE - Wills Clinic Training Thursday, March 29, 2012 More Info Attorney Volunteer Training for Wills Clinic

On Thursday, March 29, 2012, the AABA and Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program (HVLP) will be conducting a training and orientation session for attorney volunteers interested in providing services for the Wills Clinic on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

At the training session, each attorney volunteer will be assigned their client and receive basic training on how to prepare and draft the Will, Medical Power of Attorney, Directive to Physicians, HIPAA Release, and Declaration of Guardianship.

This program is qualified for 1.0 hour of MCLE credit in Texas and 0.25 hours of ethics credit.
